Curious villagers would often approach him, asking, “Venerable Ananda, while we carry bags filled with essentials, you travel with nothing. What is the most important thing you carry with you?“
With a gentle smile, Ananda would reply, “Ah, dear one, I carry with me mindfulness.”
The villagers would look puzzled. “Mindfulness? How can one carry mindfulness?”
Ananda would explain, drawing from the teachings of Buddhism, “Mindfulness is the continuous presence of mind. It’s the awareness of our thoughts, actions, and feelings without judgment. By being mindful, we remain anchored in the present moment, allowing us to experience life in its fullness. While material possessions can be lost, stolen, or decay, mindfulness remains, a constant companion guiding us towards enlightenment.“
He would often add, “In our journey through life, we encounter various challenges and distractions. Desires, fears, and illusions often cloud our judgment. But with mindfulness, we can see things as they truly are, not as they appear to be. It helps us detach from our desires, understand the impermanence of life, and cultivate compassion for all beings.”
The story of Ananda and his wisdom became legendary in Dharmapuri. Over time, many villagers began practicing mindfulness, realizing its profound impact on their lives. They found that by carrying mindfulness with them, they were better equipped to handle life’s challenges, make wiser decisions, and lead more fulfilling lives.
From the eastern perspective, especially within the teachings of Buddhism, while there are many valuable tools and practices to cultivate spiritual growth, mindfulness stands out as a foundational element. It’s not just a practice but a way of life, a lens through which we can view the world with clarity and compassion.
